Professor Bin Zhao is a distinguished scholar and academic in the field of civil engineering, specializing in structural disaster prevention and mitigation. Currently affiliated with College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University in Shanghai, China. He has been serving as Deputy Head of the Department of Disaster Mitigation For Structures since 2016.
Prof. Zhao earned his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology (1994-1998) after completing his Bachelor's (1985–1989) and Master's (1989–1992) degrees at Xi'an University of Science and Technology. His global academic exposure includes a one-year exchange study at Tottori University, Japan (1996–1998), followed by postdoctoral research at Tongji University (1998–2000). he has held prestigious fellowships as DAAD Scholar at RWTH Aachen University, Germany (2004) and Marie Curie Fellow at ELSA Lab, Joint Research Centre, European Commission (2006-2009).
Recognized globally for his international research contributions, Prof. Zhao currently services as Chinese National Delegate to the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) and Associate Editors-in-Chief of fib journal of Structural Concrete. he is the convener of ISO/TC 71/SC 5/WG 1 Simplified seismic assessment and rehabilitation of concrete buildings.
Prof. Zhao specializes in developing advanced innovative approaches to structural safety and disaster resilience. As a prolific scholar, he is/was the Principal Investigator of more than 10 national research projects and has authored more than 150 publications, focusing on seismic resilient structural systems.
